#23 Trying to be someone else when you homeschool.

  • 365 Things to Avoid while Homeschooling

Share

We all have an idea of how a homeschooling parent ought to be.  Maybe she's an efficient and joyful homemaker with lots of energy and a passion for literature, or maybe she's an all-giving earth mother who is endlessly creative, and always knows the right thing to say or maybe she's something else.  Whoever she is, if we buy curriculum and plan our days around what *she* would enjoy and excel at, we're going to make the real people in our lives crazy.

Figure out how YOU can best homeschool YOUR KIDS.  They love you, not Mrs. Perfect Homeschooler.  If doing it all yourself leaves you crabby and impatient, find ways to share the work (hint: get your kids involved).  Find ways to cover material that works well with your and your kids' personalities.  Recognize your own strengths and put them to work in your homeschool, and your homeschool community.  Accept that there will be difficult times.  Since our kids are likely to grow to be flawed people too, showing them how to cope with their flaws and still achieve their goals is a life lesson more important than those covered by any curriculum.
